The „Kökényes” folkdance group from Târnaveni

The „Kökényes” folkdance group was founded in the autumn of 2004, when the folkdancehouse movement restarted in the town after a long absence. The „Kökényes” name was taken up on 22nd of April 2006. The training takes place from the beginning under the guidance of Varró Huba (professional folkdancer in the „Maros” folkdancegroup) and Miklós Mónika every Saturday from 9.30 until 13.00.

At this moment „Kökényes” has 34 folkdancers in the little group “Junior Kökényes” (children from kindergarden up to the sixth grade) and 22 dancers in the advanced group „Senior Kökényes” (children from the fifth grade up to tenth grade). The members of „Kökényes” can be proud of the many outstanding performances on local and regional events. They successfully transmitted the folk traditions of the Târnava Mica Valley in many locations where they performed in Transilvania and Hungary (Hajduszoboszló). They are constant guests at the folkdance camps from Vajdaszentiván and Szászcsávás.

The repertoire of „Kökényes” includes hungarian and gipsy dances from the Târnava Valley, hungarian dances from Vajdaszentiván and Madaras. Presently the group is learning romanian folkdance and hungarian folkdance from Kalotaszeg, and they will perform them starting this spring.

Thanks to the parents and the Ilyes Foundation’s financial support, from 2006 „Kökényes” is performing in the traditional clothes of Küküllodombó. The teachers and the group’s travel expenses are covered thanks to ALKISZ (the Hungarian Youth Association of the Târnava Mica Valley) and the winner projects.

In April 2007 „Kökényes” was the host of the first festival where all the childrenfolkdancegroups from Mures county met and performed.

„Kökényes” closed 2007 with an outstanding performance at the local theatre.In cooperation with another folkdancegroup („Biborka”) they presented the traditions from the Târnava Valley relating to Christmas. the leaders of „Kökényes” are: Gagyi Zoltán and Fodor József the danceinstructors are: Varró Huba and Miklós Mónika
